Description
For your consideration: a green squat soda bottle embossed " Johnston & Co. " from Philadelphia, PA. This is the variant modified mold / retool which has the previous proprietor partner embossing "slugged" out. In this case, the embossing grooves were actually filled in with a sort of pot metal likely, as the amorphous " Andrews " outlining can yet be discerned. Above that; an embossed six-pointed star motif. This is an interesting classic Philadelphia squat bottle representing a transition of ownership in the history of this concern. It was blown in green glass batch into a two-part private (modified) mold and finished with an applied blob lip. The smooth base (non-pontiled) diagnostic indicates that the bottle post-dates the Andrews Johnston & Co. partnership as those examples are iron-pontiled. This was recovered in a Philadelphia privy excavation in the last year. It is in very good dug condition with no damage at all. Mild use and ground wear. Displays great. Some light flea bites on the inside of the lip in one area. Clearly the result of an ice-pick pull-pry opening in the day. It measures: 7 3/16"+ x 2 9/16".
