Here is a nice clear glass, ABM (machine made), Seltzer Water bottle, 11.25 inch tall including the metal seltzer top, in blue color ACL: Edw. H. Beardsley / Alka-Seltzer (superimposed on top of a fizzing glass of Alka Seltzer - you can even see the tablet in the bottom of the glass). Complete with original metal 3-piece seltzer top, which is debossed: Edw. H. Beardsley. Also has complete undamaged glass straw. Embossed with Owens Illinois Glass Co. mark on base. See pictures above. VERY RARE, I have never before seen an Alka-Seltzer seltzer bottle, in alll my years of bottle collecting. "Hub" Beardsley was the man who had the vision to have Miles Laboratories invent the product Alka Seltzer (see history below). Found in northern Illinois in an estate sale inside a similarly marked wooden crate. Unfortunately the guy I bought this bottle from did not want to sell the crate.
The origin of Alka Seltzer traces back to the seasonal flu epidemic that spread across the United States in 1928. Hub Beardsley, president of Miles Laboratory at the time, heard a rumor that the staff at Elkhart’s newspaper were all healthy despite most of the town suffering from the flu. Curious, Beardsley went to the newspaper office to investigate. He confirmed the rumor, finding the staff perfectly healthy and working as normal. Speaking with the editor, Beardsley found out that if the staff was feeling any flulike symptoms, they took a mixture of aspirin and baking soda, which eliminated all sign of illness. Beardsley returned to Miles and reported his findings to head chemist Maurice Treneer, who went to work developing a similar mixture. He came up with a combination of aspirin, sodium bicarbonate and anhydrous citric acid that created an effervescent antacid when it reacts with water. Before it went to market, Beardsley took this new product on a cruise to test its effectiveness. As passengers became ill Beardsley gave out free samples — more than 100 pills in total — and all the passengers showed some form of relief. Coming back with great results, Miles introduced Alka Seltzer in February 1931. Unfortunately, Hub never got to see his vision realized, as he died in 1929.
Condition: Average Used condition, NO chips, cracks or dings. Just some inside content haze and some light wear from use. ACL is very nice. See pictures above. I grade this one an 8 to 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.
