Description
A Japanese tourist map from the very early 1900's.It's a large size so it may have been intended to be posted on a wall at a train station (or other public place.)
It's titled in the upper right corner in large kanji letters "Japan Map".
Above that is written "Manga Ryoko" (Cartoon or Anime Travel). These kanji are written from right to left, a pre WW2 way of writing in Japan.
In the late 1920's - the early 1930's Japanese horizontal writing changed from right to left to become similar to
alphabetical
reading, left to right. (vertical Japanese is still read right to left).
This is pointed out to show the age of this and the seven others we have listed.
This is a cartoon version of the interesting places to see in the Niigata, Tohoku area. The train lines and station names are shown which is why we think this may have been intended for posting in Japanese train stations.
The box in the upper left is a train station schedule for this area. It lists the stations, how much time it takes to get from one station to another and the cost.
We have seven of these maps, each showing a different part of Japan.
It's 30 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches (78 x 55 cm)
(There are no tack holes. Those are magnets in the corners)
