Description
A Japanese 1934 book published in Mie prefecture detailing what happened during the "Ise Revolt" when Japanese farmers protested about the Meiji government's new way of taxing farmers land. The maps show different parts of Mie and list the homes, businesses and other buildings that were burned, damaged or destroyed during the revolt.
This a short description of the revolt:
The Ise Revolt, one of Japan's largest-ever public disturbances, began in Mie Prefecture on this day in 1876. The rioting came as locals felt the pinch from the land tax reforms of 1873—which impacted villagers and hunters living on untended land particularly hard—and quickly spread to neighboring Aichi, Gifu, and Sakai (now part of Nara) Prefectures. By the time the insurrection was quelled on December 24, some 50,000 arrests had been made. Along with the previous month’s Makabe Revolt in Ibaraki Prefecture, the chaos caused was enough to convince the Meiji Government to reduce the land tax from 3% to 2.5%.
The maps fold out from within the book. The book is 8 3/4 x 6 inches. (23 x 15 cm)
